Welcome to St Mary's Church, Llanfair Discoed."LLANVAIR-DISCOED, a parish in the upper division of the hundred of Caldicott, county Monmouth, 5 miles S.W. of Chepstow, its post town. It is situated near the forest of Wentwood, and on the road to Usk. The parish includes the hamlet of Dinham, and the remains of Dinham Castle, now a ruin overgrown with wood. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage of Caerwent, in the diocese of Llandaff. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Description taken from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Lamecare'. The name means Mary's (Mair > Fair) church (llan) under (is) the wood (coed). The 'd' at the start of Discoed only appears in more recent versions of the name. The correct Welsh language name is Llanfair Is Coed or Llanfair-iscoed. The wood probably refers to Wentwood. The village contains a small ruined castle, believed to have been built by the FitzPayn family, as lords of Llanvair Discoed, in the 13th century. (Taken from Wikipedia.) The Village Fun Day raised approximately £517.00 !! Thank you to all who came and despite the weather we all seemed to have a great time! A BIG thanks for Keith and Sue from The Woodlands Tavern for letting us use their upper room due to bad weather. A selection of the photos can be found here. (If you want a larger copy of the photos get in touch with Andrew from bramble Cottage) We have a new vicar!! The PCC are delighted to be able to inform you that the Rev Dr William Ingle-Gillis (Will) has been appointed as our new Priest in Charge for our Parish and the other parishes of Caerwent, Newchurch & Shirenewton. Will was ordained in 2004 and is currently the Associate Priest serving in the Rectorial Benefice of Caldicot. He is married to Heidi with two young children, Isaac and Eli, and is looking very much forward to getting involved in our community. I am sure that you will join me in welcoming him to our Parish and wish him every success in the coming years.
This fantastic little church is located here.
